Mr. Unaegbu has authored 25 books and published numerous articles and produced over twenty video documentaries, with one (on Nnamdi Azikiwe) displayed in the Michigan State University library. He is a former Editor-in-Chief of the Roar magazine, former Editorial Adviser, POVINAA Drumbeat Magazine and former President of the Poverty in Africa Alternative (POVINAA) Youth Empowerment Coalition (PYEC). He is the Director, Protocols and Strategic Contacts, Tropical Gate Foundation for Sustainable Development and Founder of the Fellows of Inspiration, Research and Memory (FIRM WORLD), a company focused on publishing, biography writing, sculpture, interior and exterior decoration, book publishing, music, film, fine and applied arts and mass media. One of its subsidiaries, FIRMWORLD PUBLISHERS, is based in Canada and Nigeria (https://firmpublishers.wordpress.com/) and had published many books for many authors; another subsidiary.
FIRMWORD SCULPTURES has handled major outdoor installations such as roundabout construction and decoration within Nigeria. As a prolific author, Mr. Unaegbu’s books have won worthy awards. His 512-paged Freedom in Our Bones, first-ever 44-year history of the Students’ Union Government of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, was second runner-up in the NUC-organized NURESDEF Arts/ Humanities (Research category) in year 2008 and the only existing book-size history of students’ unionism in Nigeria. His Ode on Lagos, adjudged the longest published poem by a Nigerian in a Newswatch magazine book review of April 2007, was published in his third year as an undergraduate in 2005. The book was second runner-up in the ANA/ Cadbury $2000 Prize (year 2011) and first runner-up in the NUC-organized NURESDEF Arts/ Humanities (Research category) in year 2012.
The book is listed in Leiden University Library, Netherlands. His Origins of the NYSC is the first ever full history of the national Scheme, partly written during his service year in 2007. His 529-paged Braving the Stars. The biography of Prof. P.N. Okeke (co-authored with Dr. Sam Chukwu) was his fourth biography of living Professors in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Its presentation in 2014 attracted the Deputy Senate President of Nigeria, Hon. Ike Ekweremadu and Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu etc. Later, Book Authority cited its e-version as one of the four Best Nigerian Biography eBooks of All Time. Unaegbu is the authorized and commissioned biographer/co-biographer of Prof. Alex Animalu (book published), Prof. James Adichie (book published), Prof. Agodi Onwumechili (book published), Prince A.A. Nwafor-Orizu (book published) and Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu (book in press).
His Iroko from Sapling, The History of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, 1961-2014 (co-edited with three professors etc in 2014) is the first ever published book-size history of any faculty in the University of Nigeria. His Fifty Years of African Studies: The History of the Institute of African Studies, University of Nigeria, 1963-2013 (co-authored with Prof. Sam Onuigbo) is the first book-size history of any Institute of African Studies in West Africa. His Pride of the Den, The History of the Faculty of Physical Sciences, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, 1973-2017 (co-edited with two professors in 2017) is the first ever published history of that faculty in the University of Nigeria. Jeff Unaegbu organized the Cecilia Unaegbu Flash Fiction Contest in June 2011 with cash prizes totaling 192 Dollars in memory of his mother. On January 2, 2012, along with fellow writers, Gimba Kakanda and Richard Ali, he created the Occupy Nigeria Facebook protest group against fuel subsidy removal by the Goodluck Jonathan administration in Nigeria: “Nationwide Anti-Fuel Subsidy Removal: Strategies and Protests” which went vital and got reported in national newspapers and was the subject of more than seven academic articles and PhD theses for pulling over a-22,000-youth membership in seven days, including Muhammadu Buhari’s daughter, Hajiya Safina Buhari.
Earlier in April 2011, Jeff Unaegbu’s story, Prey, was shortlisted in the African Writing Prize in Flash Fiction and published in the African Writing Online Magazine, Nigeria. Another story, Bye-Bye, was long-listed for the 2018 Diana Woods Memorial Award in Creative Non-Fiction (Antioch University, Los Angeles); “Looking for Trouble” is in Sharkpack Poetry Review (Fathom Books, Holliston, Massachusetts, USA) in April 2018; “Deep Down My Heart”, a poem, was published in Sentinel Nigeria Magazine, sixth edition, 24 May 2011, and “The Fulani Damsel” was published in Litro Magazine (Leading Literary and Creative Arts magazine in the United Kingdom) with a print Back of the Bus Edition, number 170, page 25 to page 28 (June 27, 2018).He is an African Studies Association of the United Kingdom Travel Fellowship Recipient (ASAUK Writing Workshop for African Scholars), Osun State University, September 2011.
He was appointed the Oja Cultural Development Initiative (OCDI) envoy/ ambassador on October1, 2019. Between December 5th and 11th 2019, he was in Zimbabwe on residency to supervise the Igbo indigenous Architecture or compound and exchange cultural ideas with the Dzimbanhete Arts and Culture Interactions Trust (DACIT) as the representative for OCDI. The Igbo compound was being prepared for the Sounds of the Sacred Webs Festival (August 2019-July 2020). In appreciation of his achievements, his biodata was entered into the Wikipedia Online Encyclopaedia in the year 2010.
